The Township of Franklin is a large and diverse municipality with roots dating back to the mid-18th century. With more than 60,000 residents reported on the township's website, spread over about 46 square miles, Franklin offers a mix of communities with their own identities. In 2008, Franklin Township ranked #5 on Money magazine's list of America's Top 100 Best Places to Live.
Franklin and the surrounding area was very much a part of the Revolutionary War. The opening of the Delaware and Raritan Canal in the early 19th century linking New York City and Philadelphia added to the further growth and development of the area.
An extensive network of parks and recreation, a convenient road network which includes easy access to the NJ Turnpike and Routes 27, 1, 18, & 287, and outstanding rail and bus services make Franklin a highly desirable place to live and work. In an effort to maintain the rural nature of the town that compliments the more developed areas, Franklin has preserved over 8,700 acres of land within the township.
Somerset Gate, located in the north-east section of Franklin is within blocks of New Brunswick, the county seat. New Brunswick boasts an active downtown area of restaurants and shopping as well as hotels, the State Theatre, St. Peters Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and various corporate offices. It is also home to Rutgers University and the many athletic and cultural events that are sponsored by the university.
Franklin Township public schools are comprised of six elementary schools (grades pre-K-4), one intermediate school (grades 5 & 6) and one middle school (grades 7 & 8). Franklin Township High School opened its new home facility in 2005 and has a student enrollment of about 2,000 students. In 2012, it achieved a language arts literacy proficiency rate of 89.9, just below the highest category, and a math proficiency of 78.7. The high school offers many special programs including music as well as many AP classes.
